KENPYO-SAI(Ice Dedication Festival)

This is a traditional event dating back to the fact that deities were enshrined in a Himuro, or a storage of ice, made at the foot of Mt. Kasuga (present Tsukihi-no-Iwaya) up the Yoshiki River in the 3rd year of Wado (710). The festival starts at 11:00 a.m. in the presence of ice manufacturers and retailers from all over Japan. Several pieces of flower ice and one ice column representing "a carp climbing the waterfall" are offered to the deities. In the afternoon, a traditional Bugaku, or the court dance and music of this shrine, is performed.
